DART stands for Disaster Assistance Relief Team and is a branch of the missions organization of the International Disaster Emergency Service (I.D.E.S.).  IDES’ purpose is to help meet people’s immediate needs through the local church (or missionary) in order to open doors to meet people’s spiritual needs.  One of their biggest areas of work is in helping people recover after any natural or man-made disaster.  While IDES has been very effective in helping oversees they became aware, after Hurricane Katrina, that they need to be more organized to respond to disasters on our home front.  This is why DART was birthed.  DART is a way to organize churches throughout the nation to be prepared to respond to a disaster when it hits.

The way DART works is every church gets a DART team together made up of their members with a variety of gifts.  Then the church registers with IDES to inform them of their team.  After a major disaster (hurricane, massive earthquake, flood, terrorist attack, etc.) happens the DART coordinator Joe Lutrell goes and surveys the damage then notifies certain teams to come at certain times (Clean-up, framers, electricians, plumbers, etc.).  The beauty of DART is that when a disaster happens near one of the DART churches (tornado, earthquake, or flood) they are right there to help their community and they are able to do proper follow up with the people they help.  The DART group is an active group and does not just sit around waiting for a disaster to happen.  A DART group does service projects to help those who are in need, and to practice working as a group so when a disaster strikes they can operate smoothly and focus on the task and people more than each other.
